As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
