The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Brinkman presently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the genre."
