The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
