Historical Context
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and historical connections. The two clubs have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's most recent continental tour in the mid-90s European competition, but it is the premier competition final 46 years ago that entwines these two together, with Britain's first £1m player the English forward netting the decisive goal of a pretty miserable final to clinch eternal glory for the Forest supporters.
"Forest's famous bosses, unassuming and low-key amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench quietly watching the celebrations," commented the writer. Theirs has been an remarkable feat that it is hard to see being repeated – from the lower league to continental competition in a short period."
Worth mentioning to pause a little on Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Swedish club to reach the final under manager Houghton.
The current fixture is a far cry from that summit, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since early November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.
Additional games on offer in this clockwatch. The Glasgow club have already been defeated by a Braga this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the midpoint of the group stage with no points whatsoever. They urgently require a victory if they are to have any hope of making a late surge for a qualification place.
We'll keep you up to date with all the late games and provide the latest scores from the earlier matches, including Aston Villa v Young Boys and Feyenoord v Celtic.
