An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that NicolĂ¡s Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on Monday seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
